Mahjong is a fast-paced tile game that combines skill, strategy, and luck. American Mahjong became popular in the 1920s after adaptations were made from the traditional Chinese version. In the late 1930s, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) was formed, creating standardized rules and introducing the official National Mahjongg League Card still used today.

To ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, Recreation Ministry’s Mahjong Mondays will follow standard American Mahjong rules. Tables will play in a relaxed, social format, and occasional house rules or minor adjustments may be used to help games run smoothly and keep play moving.

BEGINNERS: You will learn the fundamentals of Mahjong, including tile recognition, basic gameplay, and how to follow the NMJL card. After completing the two beginner instructional sessions, players should be able to participate confidently in social Mahjong play.

All gameplay materials will be provided. The required NMJL card will be provided for use during your first beginner session; however, players will need to purchase their own card for future game nights.

During Open Play sessions, players needing extended one-on-one instruction beyond the beginner classes may be charged an additional instructional fee (if the instructor is available) or may be asked to register for a future beginner session. Due to limited beginner spots, the instructor’s primary responsibility during instructional sessions is to those registered participants.

SEASONED PLAYERS: This level is designed for players who already understand the game and can play independently. Groups will play at their own pace throughout the evening in a relaxed, social environment.

All gameplay materials will be provided; however, players are encouraged to bring their own 2026 National Mah Jongg League Card. A limited number of cards are available for purchase.

• $30 Beginner Package (2 instructional sessions - “First time free” discount does not apply to this).

All participants, Beginners and Seasoned players, MUST COMPLETE THE ONE-TIME $10 REGISTRATION. You may then go back to the registration page and choose beginner or seasoned player, add to cart and complete the checkout. YOU MUST COMPLETE PAYMENT AND RECEIVE CONFIRMATION IN ORDER FOR US TO RECEIVE YOUR ORDER & RESERVE YOUR SPOT.

Please note: For First Time Free SEASONED PLAYERS, you will use the code SALTYMAHJONG at checkout to apply this to your order. Please do not use this code for any other purchase as you will be refunded. You will then need to re-register and pay the correct fee if the spot has not already been taken in between.
