Mahjong Mondays

Mahjong is a fast-paced tile game that combines skill, strategy, and luck. American Mahjong became popular in the 1920s after adaptations were made from the traditional Chinese version. In the late 1930s, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) was formed, creating standardized rules and introducing the official National Mahjongg League Card still used today.

To ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, Recreation Ministry’s Mahjong Mondays will follow standard American Mahjong rules. Tables will play in a relaxed, social format, and occasional house rules or minor adjustments may be used to help games run smoothly and keep play moving.

MahjDAY monday Mornings 9:30am-11:30am

BEGINNERS: You will learn the fundamentals of Mahjong, including tile recognition, basic gameplay, and how to follow the NMJL card. After completing the two beginner sessions (consecutive Mondays), players should be able to participate confidently in social Mahjong play.

All gameplay materials will be provided. The required NMJL card will be provided for use during your first beginner session; however, players will need to purchase their own card ($15) for future game nights.

SEASONED PLAYERS: This level is designed for players who already understand the game and can play independently. Groups will play at their own pace throughout the evening in a relaxed, social environment.

Players are encouraged to bring their own 2026 National Mah Jongg League Card. A limited number of cards are available for purchase ($15).

• ALL PARTICIPANTS: $10 one-time registration fee & complete registration card

• SEASONED PLAYERS: $5 per session – Open Play (first time is free-see discount code below)

• BEGINNERS: $30 Beginner Package – 2 instructional *consecutive Monday sessions (first time free discount does not apply to this).

  *We cannot accommodate non-consecutive instructional sessions
  due to the requirement of advanced reservations for instructor.

YOU MUST COMPLETE PAYMENT for registration and your Mahjong Monday night in order to reserve your spot(s). If you do not receive confirmation email, we did not receive your reservation.

Discount code for first time seasoned players is SALTYMAHJONG. Apply this to your order at checkout. Please do not use this code for any other purchase as – you will be refunded and will then need to re-register to pay the correct fee (if the spot has not already been taken in between).
